Principal trabecular structural orientation predicted by quantitative ultrasound is strongly correlated with [Formula: see text]FEA determined anisotropic apparent stiffness.

Abstract

The microarchitecture and alignment of trabecular bone adapts to the particular mechanical milieu applied to it. Due to this anisotropic mechanical property, measurement orientation has to be taken into consideration when assessing trabecular bone quality and fracture risk prediction. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has demonstrated the ability in predicting the principal structural orientation (PSO) of trabecular bone. Although the QUS prediction for PSO is very close to that of [Formula: see text]CT, certain angle differences still exist. It remains unknown whether this angle difference can induce significant differences in mechanical properties or not. The objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties in different PSOs predicted using different methods, QUS and [Formula: see text]CT, thus to investigate the ability of QUS as a means to predict the PSO of trabecular bone noninvasively. By validating the ability of QUS to predict the PSO of trabecular bone, it is beneficial for future QUS applications because QUS measurements in the PSO can provide information more correlated with the mechanical properties than with other orientations. In this study, seven trabecular bone balls from distal bovine femurs were used to generate finite element models based on the 3-dimensional [Formula: see text]CT images. Uniaxial compressive loading was performed on the bone ball models in the finite element analysis (FEA) in six different orientations (three anatomical orientations, two PSOs predicted by QUS and the longest vector of mean intercept length (MIL) tensor calculated by [Formula: see text]CT). The stiffness was calculated based on the reaction force of the bone balls under loading, and the von Mises stress results showed that both the mechanical properties in the PSOs predicted by QUS are significantly higher than the anatomical orientations and comparatively close to the longest vector of MIL tensor. The stiffness in the PSOs predicted by QUS is also highly correlated with the stiffness in the MIL tensor orientation (ATTmax vs. MIL, [Formula: see text] = 0.98, [Formula: see text]; UVmax vs. MIL, [Formula: see text] = 0.92, [Formula: see text]). These results were validated by in vitro mechanical testing on the bone ball samples. This study demonstrates that the PSO of trabecular bone predicted by QUS has an equally strong apparent stiffness with the orientation predicted by [Formula: see text]CT.

Biblical Stories Encoded In Chinese Characters

The history of China can be found written on oracle bones as early as the Shang Dynasty (c. 1700 - 1046 BC).  Chinese civilization goes as far back to the legendary period of 3000 BC. Some researchers assert that it even predates this era.

Ancient chinese writing reflects what the writer saw, observed and experienced. The Chinese and the Jews have no contact with each other until the Tang Dynasty in the 7th  century AD. Yet, some chinese words tell stories concerning the origin of man, temptation, migration (great division), the great flood, sacrifice and righteousness as recorded in the biblical Book of Genesis.

Chinese revered sages like Confucius wrote of a Supreme Creator, Shang Ti - God of Heaven in his Book of Odes and Lao Tzu in his Tao Te Ching referred to an unknown God whom he called Tao - The Way, The Almighty.

The Six Instructions For The Wen Clan 温氏圣谕六训

We talk about living a life of significance and leaving behind a legacy that will have positive impact on our children and descendants.

Well, here are the "Six Instructions" for the Wen clan 温氏圣谕六训 which mirrored the 'Placard of Instructions to the People' promulgated by the 1st Ming Emperor Hung Wu 洪武帝 (Zhu Yuanzhang 朱元璋) who dealt with local administration of justice by village elders and directed that in every village a disabled, very old or bind person, led by a young boy should walk the streets, ringing a copper bell with a wooden clapper and chanting the "Six Instructions" (Source : Rayne Kruger. All Under Heaven - A Complete History Of China. West Sussex, England : John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2003)  :

孝顺父母,尊敬长上,和睦乡邻,各安生理,教训子孙,勿作非为。

The 1st instruction   : 孝顺父母 - Maintain filial obligations

The 2nd instruction  : 尊敬长上 - Respect for elders

The 3rd instruction  : 和睦乡邻 - Harmonious relations with neighbours

The 4th instruction  : 各安生理 - Work peacefully for your own livelihood

The 5th instruction  : 教训子孙 - Instruct and discipline sons and grandsons

The 6th instruction  : 勿作非为 - Do not commit a wrongful deed

My First Dorado on My First Fishing Trip to Pulau Perhentian Besar

Caught my 1st dorado weighing 3.13kg on the 2nd day of my fishing trip with my GLAD kaki's to Pulau Perhentian Besar (16th Sept 2011-18th Sept 2011) with a 6'6" Abu Garcia Vengeance rod/20lb Toman braided line/Abu Garcia Gold ProMax bait caster and a 5"(approx) live 'tamban' bait.

What a day and what a fight!

I clinched the championship for landing the heaviest catch on this particular outing.

Brendon Todd Makes History with Aces on Same Hole

Brendon Todd's double aces on the 17th hole in Athens, Georgia on the 1st and 2nd day of the 2009 Athens Regional Foundation Classic made history. Todd became the 1st player in the PGA Tour's 20-year history to ace the same hole twice in the same tournament.

The Clay Pigeon Golf Shot

Try replacing a rifle with a cross-hair scope with a golf iron played the regular and legit way, you will get a different ball game all together which is much more difficult to execute and score.

The Gunpowder Golf Shot

I have heard of guys hitting shots into a small net suspended just above the surface of a pond, but this shot is something else.
